This major FFXIV progression change could be what gets me playing | Gaming | Entertainment
Square Enix has announced the next expansion for Final Fantasy XIV Online, Evercold – and it’s bringing with it some huge quality of life improvements.
Arriving in January 2027, Evercold is set to be the next big chapter in the story of FFXIV with the seventh expansion taking players into the ‘Godless Realm Saga’. That of course means new story content, new jobs, and a bunch of improvements to the game’s design, but there’s one big change that’s likely to be a hit among fans both old and new.
Like most MMOs, Final Fantasy XIV currently uses a daily system that rewards players for completing quests and other in-game actions within a 24 hour period. However, Square Enix is set to move to a weekly reward system with the launch of Evercold in a bid to make the game more friendly to a wider range of schedules.
So, instead of reward tasks resetting at the end of each day, players will now have a whole week to complete their quests. Those who want to log in for a short time each day can still do so, but it allows for those who only play on the weekend to catch up with what time they have.
Square Enix also wants the system to reward gamers for playing in the way they enjoy, rather than forcing them to complete tasks they wouldn’t do otherwise. As such, some weekly quests will be repeatable with players able to earn a maximum number of upgrade points per week.
The development team is also considering being more lenient with players who miss particular weeks, too. Game director Yoshi P explains that the team is considering adding a feature that means If you fail to max out your total upgrade points one week, you’ll have a chance to earn them back the following week providing you reach that current week’s cap.
“Evolving from daily to weekly allows players more options to play,” Yoshi P said on stage. “Log in a bit each day, or grind all weekend. You decide your in-game schedule without any penalty.”
While the system’s announcement initially earned a few groans from the audience, Yoshi P’s explanation of the change seemed to win the crowd over. It seems that dedicated players will still be able to reap rewards for playing consistently, while making the system more approachable for those who have less time to dedicate to FFXIV.
As a gamer who’s considered playing MMOs but has always shied away from them due to their immense time commitment, this change has certainly piqued my interest.
The change is expected to arrive with the launch of the Evercold expansion in January 2027.
