Visitors have been left spellbound by this stunning village described as “like walking through a storybook” which is frequently confused for Italy – yet it’s located right here in the UK. While jetting off overseas can be wonderful, the costs can mount up, particularly in sought-after Italian tourist destinations.

Nevertheless, just a railway journey away or brief flight lies the tranquil village of Portmeirion in Gwynedd, north Wales, which bears a striking resemblance to Lake Como.

This remarkable destination, which has been flooded with five-star reviews on Tripadvisor, features stunning landscapes, sub-tropical gardens and charming cottages alongside numerous shops, cafés, restaurants – and even a genuine Italian-style gelato parlour.

This concealed treasure showcases vibrant buildings, palm trees, and abundant al fresco dining and hospitality venues with views across the magnificent waterfront. Tripadvisor characterises the location as a “dreamlike world, full of surprises” steeped in fascinating heritage.

The scenic setting has served as a filming location for numerous movies and television programmes.

A duo, known as Cez and Gaz who are passionate about travel, recently posted a viral clip of the destination along with their assessment on TikTok. Cez remarked: “Would you believe me if I told you this isn’t an Italian village but it’s actually somewhere in the UK.”

She continued: “This enchanting village was conceived in the 1920s by a Welsh architect to introduce a hint of Mediterranean charm to Britain and its construction spanned almost half a century. It’s nestled along the coastline, brimming with vibrant structures, hidden gardens, golden beaches and even features an enormous chessboard.”

Cez went on: “It genuinely feels like stepping through the pages of a fairytale. It’s an ideal location for summer photography, clocking up your daily steps or savouring some delectable cuisine.

“My mum got married here, it was so special,” added one. “How have I never heard of this?” commented one other.

“No way, really I can’t believe this,” added another. One other said: “I had a mini holiday there last year and I stayed in the castle upon entry.”

Entry to the village requires payment. Adult admission costs £20 per day, whilst students and those aged over 60 pay £17.50.

You have to pay to visit the village. It is priced at £20 per day for adults, £17.50 for students and visitors over 60. Children between ages five and 15 can visit for £15, while children under five can visit for free. Visitors can also get family tickets. All tickets can be purchased from the Portmeirion website.

How to get there

If you’re journeying from England, a train ride from London will take at least five hours and 50 minutes. From Manchester, it’s about five hours, and typically four hours and 45 minutes from Birmingham by train.

Many holidaymakers choose to drive or take the coach when visiting Wales.

For those who’d rather fly, Anglesey Airport – situated 30 miles from Portmeirion – is an option. The airport offers twice-daily flights from Cardiff Airport on weekdays.

The closest major international airports to Portmeirion are Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport, both roughly two hours away by car.

The trip from both Manchester and Liverpool airports is approximately 100 miles and takes about two hours. Therefore, if you reside in the south, it might be worth considering flying up to northern England first if lengthy car or train journeys aren’t your cup of tea.
