Butlins will speed up bar service across its holiday resorts this summer with the rollout of a new technology. Customers will be able to use self-serve bars that dispense drinks at the touch of a button in as little as six seconds to help cut queues during the busy holiday periods.

More than 100 Boxbar machines have been installed throughout entertainment venues in Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skegness, making Butlins the first holiday park to adopt the technology. Customers have to put a cup underneath the spout, choose their drink order on the screen and tap their card for the drink to be dispensed, which bosses claim can be 360% faster than a human bartender.

More than 20 soft and alcoholic options will be on offer, including draught beers and ciders like Madri and Guinness, and spirits such as Smirnoff vodka. Boxbar will also dispense cocktails, like the brand’s signature Butlin’s On The Beach.

Heidi Watson, head of innovation at Butlin’s, said it was “an exciting first” for the company, meaning that guests can spend “less time queueing and more time enjoying their holiday with family and friends”.

She said: “Everything we do is about improving the guest experience and our new Boxbar Self-Serve Bars will make a real difference to guests on a family break or a Big Weekender.”

Samantha Moss warned that lines at some of the Skegness pubs were “ridiculous” on Facebook, while Mart Lloyd said the queues at a 00s nostalgia weekend were “shocking”. Another claimed her friend had waited for an hour at the bar.

Self-serve bars have already been rolled out across several sports stadiums to help reduce queue times. At the start of this season, Southampton FC installed two automated Boxbars at St Mary’s Stadium. Bosses claim it can serve up to 2,400 pints per hour.
