Kindle rival gives you another reason to ditch Amazon for good

Now, there’s another reason to switch to Kobo. If you like tracking your Kindle reads with Goodreads, the popular app owned by Amazon that integrates with Kindles, Kobo has just announced a partnership with rival book logging app StoryGraph.

Amazon was never going to let Kobo integrate Goodreads into its software, so in June Kobo will push out a software update to e-readers that integrates your StroyGraph account onto your device, which will automatically sync your reading progress.

Just like Goodreads, StoryGraph lets you add friends and see what they are reading, while acting as a centralised place for you to track what you’re reading, review it when you’re done, and save books that you want to read. This is the first time Kobo has partnered with such a service, and could be the best way to give up your Kindle and Goodreads – and you can even import your existing Goodreads data into StoryGraph.

“For a lot of us, the best part of reading is the community. It’s a part of how we show up in the world as readers every day,” said Michael Tamblyn, CEO, Rakuten Kobo in a press release.

“That’s why I’m so excited about our integration with StoryGraph. We wanted to strip away the friction between finishing a chapter and tracking and sharing your progress. Now, Kobo readers can do exactly that, seamlessly. We love the ability to celebrate every page turned and every book completed with people who care just as much as you do. It makes your reading life a little more connected, a little more insightful, and a whole lot more fun.”

Along with OverDrive, Kobos can also link to users’ Instapaper accounts. Kobo introduced the read later service integration after Mozilla shuttered Pocket, the once-popular alternative.

“StoryGraph is renowned for its powerful feature set and deep data insights,” Kobo said.

“By linking their accounts, Kobo users can leverage StoryGraph’s sophisticated analytics to understand their reading habits better. From personalized recommendations based on your unique tastes to detailed charts about your reading moods and pace, users can gain a deeper understanding of their literary journey.”

Kobo sells several e-readers in the UK with competitive prices compared to Kindles, although recently Kobo has raised its prices.
