A “masterpiece” comedy hailed as the best movie of the 1980s is streaming for free in the UK. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), starring Matthew Broderick in the titular role, focuses on a rebellious teenager in a Chicago suburb who decides to skive off school and enjoy a day of pure joy with his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) and best buddy, Cameron (Alan Ruck).
Written and directed by John Hughes, the film is a light-hearted and surrealistic rumination on youth and the importance of living in the moment – featuring iconic fourth-wall breaking sequences. Fans have taken to IMDb to lavish the film with praise. One wrote: This might just be the best 80s movie of all time, probably even better than top gun which previously held this spot.”
Another, who gave the film a perfect score, wrote: “Not just an 80’s classic. It’s an all time comedy classic that just happens to be from a decade of great movies
“This is hilarious, easily Broderick’s best movie. The games between Ferris and Mr Rooney are great. All of the actors do a top job but Jeffrey Jones steals the show as Edward Rooney, hilarious. Excellent comedy.”
A third added: “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a masterpiece of simplicity. It shows how a movie with such a straightforward plot just a teen skipping school-can be so brilliant.
“Every scene, every line, and every moment feels perfectly crafted. The film balances humor, heart, and a rebellious spirit that feels timeless.”
A fourth chimed in with: “The simplicity of this film is it’s genius, Ferris is a rule breaker. But he is certainly a very likeable character & along with the growth of his best friend during the film Cameron.
“The relationship between these characters & the constant chase from the head teacher Rooney, give this film a real depth.
“I can guarantee this film will bring a smile to anyone’s face. No matter what mood you may be in, this is a film that will always lighten your mood.”
A fifth added: “Must see if you’re born in the 90s & 2000s. Most movies from the 80s lose their appeal as we age. This one has held its entertainment value through the years. Best movie of the 80s.”
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is streaming for free on ITVX (with ads).
