Households struggling with rising energy bills are being urged to check what support they could claim, with some suppliers offering help worth up to £1,700. Energy costs are expected to climb again this summer, with the Ofgem price cap currently at £1,641 a year but forecast to rise to as much as £1,899 or even £1,929 from July, according to industry analysts.

The increase comes amid ongoing global uncertainty, including tensions in the Middle East, which continue to drive volatility in gas prices. With many families already under pressure, several major energy firms are offering grants, debt relief and free energy-saving measures to help customers cope.

OVO Energy

OVO is offering support through a £56 million “Extra Support Package”, which includes direct debit reductions, emergency credit and extended repayment plans.

Customers may also receive free energy-saving items such as electric throws and insulation kits, as well as larger upgrades through the ECO4 scheme, including new boilers or heat pumps.

Octopus Energy

Octopus runs an assist fund that provides financial help to customers in difficulty. Households can apply at any time by submitting details of their financial situation, with support tailored to individual circumstances.

E.ON Next

E.ON Next offers grants through its Energy Fund, which can help clear energy debt. Customers must first complete a three-month payment plan, after which outstanding debt may be written off.

The supplier may also replace essential household appliances, such as fridges or washing machines, for eligible customers.

Scottish Power

Scottish Power provides support via its Hardship Fund, aimed at customers on low incomes or benefits such as Universal Credit. Payments vary depending on individual circumstances.

British Gas

The British Gas Energy Trust offers grants of up to £1,700 to help clear energy debt, including for customers on prepayment meters.

The scheme is open to both British Gas customers and those with other suppliers, although applicants must meet specific criteria, including having received financial advice and holding qualifying debt.
