BT is changing how much it hikes its customers’ bills mid-contract, with prices set to rise annually by £4 per month for new customers. As of today, July 31, 2025, any new customers who sign up for a broadband package from BT, EE or Plusnet will be subject to a £4 monthly bill price rise from March 31, 2026 and a further £4 on March 31, 2027.

The news comes the same week Ofcom confirmed that BT had paid out £18 million to customers it had not given adequate contract information to.

The annual price mid-contract rises had previously been set at £3, so the rise to £4 represents an increase of 33.3 percent. These changes were first reported by ISPreview.

“We are very supportive of Ofcom’s requirement to show upfront pounds and pence charges,” a BT Consumer spokesperson told Express.co.uk. “EE was the first provider to introduce this pricing model, offering EE customers a predictable long-term view of their contract terms. Our pricing approach is designed to be clear for our customers.”

Under new rules, BT is not choosing to be clearer in how it shows long-term pricing, as it has been forced to by the UK regulator Ofcom, along with all other internet and phone service providers.

Earlier this year, Ofcom changed the rules for broadband and mobile providers around mid-contract price rises. Providers must now state clearly to customers by how much their contract prices will increase in pounds and pence, and when, when advertising products.

Mid-contract price hikes have existed for many years, but it was deemed they were not previously presented to customers with adequate transparency, resulting in bill shock for many Brits.

ISPreview published what it says, citing BT, are the exact amount BT prices will rise annually with contracts taken out on or after July 31, 2025, and stated by exactly how much depending on what product is purchased:

• Mobile
  • Flex Pay airtime plan +£2.50
  • Sim only +£2.50
  • Bundled handset and airtime plans +£4
  • Mobile broadband dongles – £1.50
  • Connected devices including Laptops, Tablets, Smartwatches +£1.50 per month
• Broadband (including hubs that use a 4G/5G sim) +£4 per month
• Out of bundle services will also increase by 5% on 31st March each year

These changes apply to BT, EE and Plusnet plans.

“We continue to invest in our business, building on 11 years as the best network to better serve our customers with a reliable and quality connection as we roll out the fastest speed technology to 30m homes by the end of the decade,” the BT spokesperson said. “We’re focused on providing value and customer satisfaction, making new technologies available to our customers such as 5G standalone and WiFi 7.”

“It’s shocking that BT is choosing to increase its mid-contract price rises above the rate of inflation for any new customers who sign up for broadband packages from BT, EE or Plusnet from 31st July,” said Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy.

“Any out-of-contract BT, EE and Plusnet customers who aren’t happy with these hikes should vote with their feet and switch to a cheaper deal. We’d always recommend carefully weighing up the total costs of any new contract to ensure it offers value for money and you’re aware of any possible increases.”
