BT is bringing back a “troubling” fee that could impact thousands of UK users. Like most other Internet Service Providers (ISPs), BT hasn’t charged a joining fee for several years. However, that’s now changing with new users being hit by a £30 sign-up cost. This one-off charge covers things such as the new router that has to be sent out in the post, along with activation and installation.

It’s clearly not great for those considering taking out a plan with BT, and this isn’t the only ISP affected.

Some of BT’s sister brands have also added the charge, with EE wanting £30 to join and Plusnet charging £20.

BT has confirmed that it has had to introduce the fee to cover the rising cost of electronic devices, which include routers. The firm says it remains committed to offering market-leading broadband reliability, service and value and will continue to review its costs.

However, rivals such as Virgin Media, Community Fibre and Vodafone continue to offer free set-up.

The team at Broadband Genie has also raised concerns about users not receiving a refund if they cancel during the usual cooling-off period.

“Asking a customer to pay £30 before their connection is even switched on is a clear barrier for many bill payers and an easy way to push people elsewhere,” said Alex Tofts, strategist at Broadband Genie.

“It is also very troubling this is a cost some customers might not get back should they legitimately have to cancel their contract, even upon returning the router.”

If you are already with BT, EE or Plusnet, you won’t be impacted, but those switching will need to stump up the charges, and that means now is an especially good time to shop around.

“The good news is there are other, better-value providers using the same Openreach network that BT, EE, and Plusnet rely on,” Tofts added.

“Depending on where you live, you might have even more options available. The UK broadband market is fiercely competitive right now, providers are jostling to entice new customers with lower monthly fees, bill credits, and reward vouchers.

“Switching is your superpower, your current provider won’t give you these for sticking about. The best place to start your broadband switch is with an Ofcom trusted comparison site.”
