Benidorm has long been a favourite destination for Brits seeking some warmer weather together with some home comforts. Since flights to the destination became cheaper in the 1970s thanks to package getaways, it has remained a solid fixture of many Britons’ yearly routine. But Benidorm has a mixed reputation, with some suggesting it is “ugly”. But some parts are said to be “lovely”, not least the Old Town.

Now, it has been said that a Canary Island is slowly turning into Benidorm. Tenerife is another Spanish spot regularly visited by Brits, and earlier this month locals protested against overtourism and its concequences. Amberleigh.travels posted a video of people riding on scooters in the Playa de las Americas in the south of Tenerife. People from the UK and Ireland flock to the area as it has many familiar bars and pubs, as well as a beachfront.

Mobility scooters in Benidorm were made famous by the character Madge in the popular ITV comedy series set in the Costa Blanca town.

The vehicles have become associated with leisure and even laziness in Benidorm over the years.

In the video, one individual on a scooter looked quite red, as if she could have done with wearing more sun cream.

“I fear Tenerife is slowly becoming Benidorm,” she said.

One person commented: “I’m swedish and I find it pretty hard to tell many Europeans apart. But when i was in Spain you could see exactly who was British.

“It’s the lobster red skin, out of style clothes and hair.”

A different account claimed hypocracy, writing: “Same people who yell at legal immigrants in their own country.”

Someone else said: “I love how brits vote for being alone out of Europe but they are literally bugs flying all over Europe 24/7. Guys what do you want?”

The scooters featured in the video were also denounced as “a pain in the backside”.

A commenter added that they “should only be used by people who have difficulty in walking” and not “lazy” people who “can’t be bothered to walk”.

Around a year ago, a visitor to Benidorm said on Reddit: “My wife and I went on a whim years back as we needed to pick somewhere quick which was cheap. We avoided the ‘British Ghetto’ and had a lovely time.

“Stayed in a three star apartment complex on the south of the town. The apartment complex was great. Fantastic staff, great food, clean pool and lovely bar.

“First couple of nights we struggled to find a nice place to eat but the staff suggested the tapas bars in the old town. Amazing food. Maybe we got lucky but we had a ball.”

Someone else replied: “I’ve been a few times (twice as a child, twice as an adult). If you avoid the bit with all the British bars, it’s absolutely fine. The old town is lovely, there are loads of trips and things to do for families.

“I’ve stayed in the Ocas (sister hotel to the Pelicans where Benidorm is filmed) and it’s just like any other Spanish hotel catering for foreign tourists.”
