The beautiful Canary Island with few British tourists that rarely gets over 30C | Travel News | Travel

Those looking for a getaway in the Canary Islands with cooler weather and smaller crowds need to look no further than this beautiful island.

La Gomera has all the beaches, traditions and history of its more famous neighbours but with a much more relaxed atmosphere and milder conditions.

The island is still warm with summer highs of 28C but the Atlantic breeze prevents visitors from getting hot and bothered, and more importantly, sunburned.

Activities to enjoy in La Gomera include hiking, black-sand bathing and foods including melon lobster and marmalade rabbit.

It is also home to the Garajonay National Park, a misty rainforest which is home to an array of rare plants and wildlife.

And nature lovers have plenty to enjoy as the island is also home to Valle Gran Ray, a rocky beach with a dramatic shoreline, and Alto de Garajonay, a series of mountains with specially lined out hiking trails.

History fans can enjoy La Iglesia de la Asunción de San Sebastián de La Gomera, a 15th century church which was expanded in the 18th century following attacks from England and North Africa.

There is also Museum Peg Los Telares, which is an open-air museum that showcases a collection of ancient antiques set against the stunning backdrop of palm trees, bananas, aloes and exotic plants.

To get the best view of the city, visitors should go to Mirador De Abrante which offers an incredible view from a glass box suspended on the top of a mountain.

TripAdvisor reviewers praised the lookout, which also has its own cafe for its “great view”.

One review read: “Great view, there is no entrance fee and a welcoming guide.

“It’s possible to get there by either hiking from Agulo or driving, but the road by car is quite narrow.

“The view from the Mirador is iconic for La Gomera with a great view towards Teide on Tenerife.”

Those wishing to visit the island should first take a flight to Gran Canaria before taking a connecting flight to La Gomera. However, this can be quite expensive with return flights in March topping £300.
