‘Superb’ period drama based on true events now on Netflix | Films | Entertainment

This popular series is made up of famous British actors is set against the never-dull backdrop of London in the 1800s, and TV fans can’t get enough of it.

Ripper Street is a British drama series beginning in 1889, just months since the last of the Jack the Ripper murders. The series is set in Whitechapel, in the east end of London and follows the lives of officers in the H Division, left in the wake of the chaotic murders.

On the lookout amongst the local pubs, brothels, factories, and more, Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, played by none other than Matthew Macfadyen, alongside Bennet Drake, played by Jerome Flynn, teams up with others to investigate the killings. Joining them on their mission is an expert former US Army surgeon, Captain Homer Jackson, who helps to investigate the elusive killings.

A raving Rotten Tomatoes review claims:”The show is really good. The way the portray characters really keeps you on edge. You just don’t know what plot twist is gonna happen next. The season starts off very strong and you wanna keep watching.”

Critics share similar views as The Hollywood Reporter wrote: “Ripper Street is a well-acted, well-written and compelling mystery series. And even better, there’s no waiting around, wishing it would improve. It’s alluring from the start.”

First released in 2012, the TV show has gone on to have five successful series and introduces us to new characters along the way, including the likes of Detective Sergeant Flight, played by Brassic’s Damien Molony. However, what got people talking in the first place is the Game of Thrones actor, Jerome Flynn.

Many have even gone as far as to compare Ripper Street to the award-winning HBO fantasy show, with one person claiming it’s the “best series” they’ve seen since Game of Thrones. One viewer claimed: “I didn’t think any show could outdo Game of Thrones. Ripper Street, and in particular, seasons two and three, demolished that idea.

“I was never as heavily invested in a TV series as this. The writing is almost Shakespearean at times, the acting is gritty and sublime, and my emotional meter beats like a parade drum. Holy moly, this is a lesson on how to create great drama.”

After four years of episodes leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, the show concluded its fifth series in 2016. Since then, the drama has gained new fans keen to binge-watch it all and immerse themselves in the gritty crimes of the Victorian-era of London.

A satisfied viewer shared: “I was never as heavily invested in a TV series as this. The writing is almost Shakespearean at times, the acting is gritty and sublime, and my emotional meter beats like a parade drum.

“Holy moly, this is a lesson on how to create great drama.”

To watch all five seasons of Ripper Street, head to Netflix where you can stream over 30 episodes now.
