It’s gearing up to be yet another busy summer for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Manchester United hierarchy, with the Red Devils on the lookout for a new gaffer. Including interims, Michael Carrick is the fourth manager to have taken charge of United since Ratcliffe and co. rocked up at Old Trafford.

It’s far from an ideal situation, given Ratcliffe promised to return United to the top of English football. Over two years on from his arrival, and the 20-time English champions don’t appear to be any closer to that goal, with INEOS unable to afford another botched managerial appointment.

It’s also likely to be an important summer as far as player recruitment goes, with United desperate to improve their midfield options. Ratcliffe has already named his dream addition to bolster United’s midfield ranks, but the only problem is that it’s a player who retired 13 years ago!

Speaking shortly after he took over the reins at United, Ratcliffe revealed his dream signing would be none other than Paul Scholes. He said on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club: “Paul Scholes I’d bring in.

“That’s the player that is most missing. They are not Roy Keane but they have Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, they are more defensive. They don’t have a Scholes, an (Andres) Iniesta.”

Suffice to say, Scholes will not be rocking up at Old Trafford for another stint, even if he has previously come out of retirement to make a United return. But United will definitely be looking at midfield additions in the summer, not least because veteran Casemiro is calling time on his time with the club.

Posting on social media earlier this year, he revealed: “Knowing when stages come to an end. Knowing when to say goodbye when you feel that you will be remembered and respected forever. Four months to give my all for this badge and for our goal. Eternal respect and affection for Manchester United and its wonderful fans. Forever Red Devil.”
