Man Utd could land millions from Mason Greenwood amid Rashford option | Football | Sport
Manchester United could be set to pocket a hefty sum from a potential Mason Greenwood transfer, despite offloading the academy product to Ligue 1 outfit Marseille back in 2024. Since his switch to France, the 24-year-old has netted an impressive 33 goals in 52 appearances, attracting attention from several top-tier European clubs.
After being suspended by United, Greenwood made his return to football during a loan stint with La Liga side Getafe last season, before subsequently agreeing a permanent move to Marseille for £26.6million. United secured a 50 per cent sell-on fee should the French team decide to cash in.
The former United star was rumoured to be on the verge of a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia in the recent summer transfer window, although a deal never materialised. La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are also reportedly keeping tabs on Greenwood, having allegedly scouted him in Marseille’s 6-2 victory over Le Havre this season.
Hansi Flick’s side are believed to be evaluating their attacking options ahead of next summer, with Marcus Rashford currently on loan at the Camp Nou. Rashford has been turning heads since his move there and Barcelona have an option to sign the England international for £25million, plus £5million in add-ons. Should Greenwood make the switch to the Camp Nou, he would be reunited with his former United colleague.
Nevertheless, Spanish media suggest Atletico Madrid are also keen on the 24-year-old, which could scupper any potential reunion. Sources indicate the French club have placed a £70million price tag on his head, with Diego Simeone reportedly impressed by what Greenwood might bring to his Atletico squad.
Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi was quizzed about Greenwood prior to Tuesday evening’s Champions League encounter with Newcastle United and insisted the ex-United forward had suffered significantly for events during his spell at Old Trafford.
The Italian manager said: “He’s a good guy, he paid a heavy price for what happened, a very heavy price. He has found the right environment for him. We have lent him a hand and given him affection.
“He’s a little bit introverted, but I know him and his family. It saddens me what has happened in his life, because I know a totally different person than the one who was described in England.”
