Majorca anti-tourism protest LIVE: Crowds storm streets | World | News

Majorca is heaving with anti-tourism protestors brandishing placards, signs and even a model cruise liner – as locals make their feelings known about the quantity of holidaymakers descending on their island every year.

It is a repeat of other protests seen across Spain and comes during peak season, when scores of Brits will be taking their annual breaks in the Majorcan sun.

But officials have insisted there cannot be a repeat performance of what happened in Barcelona – where tourists who were sitting and innocently eating al-fresco were sprayed with water.

Some holidaymakers were also jeered at as they ate meals on Palma’s Weyler Square during the last protest in the capital on May 25.

Ahead of the action, campaigners have released a video appearing to sanction hire car bans and gloat at the idea of empty hotels and no-bike tourists. They also talk about ploughing up the holiday island’s motorway network in the promotional video for the Palma demo. It has been dubbed “emotive” by one local newspaper.
