A Scottish city has beat competition from across the country to be named the best place to visit in the UK in 2026. 

In a recent Time Out list of 14 must-visit UK destinations for the year ahead, Stirling in Scotland grabbed the number one spot. It has long been a destination for history buffs eager to visit the National Wallace Monument, which stands just above where William Wallace led his troops to victory, and is close to the picturesque Loch Lomond. 

However, the number of visitors in 2026 is set to soar, thanks to better connections between Stirling and London. Lumo, an all-electric rail operator, is set to begin running a direct route from London Euston to Stirling in mid-2026, with four trains a day running on the line. Book in advance, and you can pick up fares for as little as £30 one-way, which is significantly cheaper than other England to Scotland routes.

One of the city’s most iconic sights is Stirling Castle, often considered among the most historically important castles in Scotland. Most of the castle was built in the 15th and 16th century, with dramatic turrets and towers that once helped guard the city.

However, the castle wasn’t just for defence, it was also a palace and many Scottish kings and queens were crowned here. Most famously, Mary, Queen of Scots, who was brought to the castle for protection and crowned in the chapel royal. It’s worth taking a tour to truly appreciate its rich history throughout the centuries.

The National Wallace Monument is also an incredible place to visit and learn more about the man dubbed Scotland’s National Hero. You can climb the tower, seeing important artefacts such as Wallace’s sword along the way, before enjoying 360 degree views from the top. There are also interactive performances with a costumed actor who brings the story of William Wallace to life.

Doune Castle is one for lovers of history, but also TV and movie fans, as it has been used for filming a number of productions. This medieval castle is used extensively in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and more recently, it was the home of the MacKenzie clan in Outlander. 

At the foot of Stirling Castle, you can stop by Stirling Distillery. The city last made whisky back in 1852, when its last distillery closed, and this new operation opened its doors back in 2019 to create a variety of local liquors. Look out for the first batch of Stirling whiskey in over a century and a half, ready to sample in late-2026. 

Stirling’s proximity to Loch Lomond also makes it a useful starting point for those who want to enjoy Scotland’s natural beauty.The easiest option is to book a guided tour, as this will take you around the winding country roads, so you can just focus on enjoying the scenery. Some day trips also come with a Loch Lomond Cruise, arguably one of the best ways to appreciate the views. 

Some tours also take in the wider Trossachs National Park, where you can see Highland cows grazing in their natural habitat and work through spectacular walking trails. You can even escape from the modern world and wild camp for the night, with plenty of places to pitch up and see the stars.
