Jay Slater LIVE: Mountain rescue’s verdict on latest search as police bring efforts to an | World | News

Spanish police have given their latest assessment on the search for Jay Slater as efforts to find the missing Brit come to an end. Tenerife’s Guardia Civil confirmed on Sunday (June 30) that efforts to find Mr Slater have now ceased.

The latest development comes after authorities on the island mounted a final push to find Jay. Brigadier Cipriano Martin, Chief of the Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue unit, said Mr Slater, 19, wouldn’t have travelled to any area his team hasn’t gone to.

Speaking through a translator, he told the BBC: “There are difficult areas and we’ve given instructions for people not to risk their own safety. But there’s something we need to make clear, which is any area we don’t go to, well, Jay won’t have gone there either.”

Tenerife’s Guardia Civil had appealed for volunteers who were experts in rugged terrain to help in a massive search on Saturday (June 29) but it is believed only about a dozen turned up.

Mr Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, is understood to have disappeared while trying to walk back from the village of Masca to Los Cristianos on June 17.

A search near to his last-known location was being co-ordinated to take in a steep rocky area, including ravines, trails and paths.
