Greek island fury as huge wave from cruise ship injures beach swimmers | World | News

Holidaymakers on the Greek island of Mykonos were taken by surprise when a speeding passenger ferry caused a large wave to wash over Agios Stefanos Beach, knocking some people off their feet.

The incident, which occurred around midday on Saturday, left two people injured, with one woman reportedly sustaining broken ribs.

A beachgoer captured the dramatic moment on video, showing swimmers scrambling to escape the incoming wave and tourists desperately trying to save their belongings from being swept away.

The ferry responsible, identified as “FAST FERRIES ANDROS,” continued to the port of Rafina on mainland Greece, where the captain was arrested.

Local media reported the captain faced charges of dangerous navigation and causing injury through negligence.

The powerful wave swept away deckchairs and personal items, as sunbathers quickly ran to a nearby wall for safety.

The video also shows two teenagers and a young boy running out of the sea, while a woman who remained in the water was knocked over by the wave. The boys rushed back to help her up.

Takis Papadakos, who filmed and shared the video on Facebook, stated that the woman in the footage was hospitalised with two broken ribs.

He criticised the ferry operator, accusing the captain of speeding too close to the shore to maintain the schedule.

Although a large cruise ship can be seen in the background of the video, both beachgoers and the coast guard attributed the incident to the smaller “FAST FERRIES ANDROS”, which is not visible in the footage.

The Mykonos Port Authority has launched an investigation into the incident.
