Full list of all the holiday hotspots you will have to pay a tourist tax this summer | Travel News | Travel

Tourist taxes have become increasingly common in recent years as countries and cities look to boost their economies following the blow dealt by the Covid pandemic.

However, in many European countries such as Greece, Spain and Germany, city taxes and even hotel taxes have long been part and parcel of the tourism experience.

Below is an explainer of where British tourists can expect to be hit with additional costs on their travels this year, including new destinations.

In 2024, the UK is introducing a new system called Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which will mean visitors from the US, Europe, Australia and Canada will be required to apply for permission and pay to enter the country.

Next year, the EU bring in a new tourist visa, meaning non-EU citizens from outside the Schengen area will be made to fill out a €7 application to enter the country.

As of Spring 2024, day tourists in Venice, Italy, have been hit with charges.

Below is a list of destinations where tourist taxes are imposed (via Conde Nast Traveller), though the amount paid changes regularly.

Be sure to check with your accommodation and tourist board what you will need to pay for each destination.
