Emma Raducanu has blood pressure taken on court as Brit suffers French Open scare | Tennis | Sport
Emma Raducanu had her blood pressure checked during the first set of her match against Wang Xinyu at the French Open. The young Brit was leading by six games to five when she went back to her chair and called for the physio. Two medics rushed onto the court to provide treatment, which included taking Raducanu’s blood pressure.
The former US Open champion looked frustrated and shook her head in response to a question asked by one of the medics. She also rubbed blocks of ice around her eyes before having her blood pressure checked. After the strap was removed from her arm, Raducanu dropped something in her water bottle and took a few sips.
She was given three minutes to regain her composure before returning to the court and serving out the set in the very next game, with the 22-year-old holding to love.
Raducanu went into the match carrying a back injury, which had caused problems in Strasbourg last week. However, the issue which required a medical timeout at Roland Garros appeared to be entirely unrelated.
Speaking before her match against Wang, Raducanu said: “It [her back] is not feeling 100 per cent. I had a spasm in Strasbourg and just been trying to manage it as best I can doing treatment.
“I’ve been on the practice court last night and this morning. Yeah, it felt okay, but obviously it’s different playing a match. I’m trying to do everything to get up to speed as fast as possible.
“It is similar to the problem I had in Australia, I would say the one before Australia was worse. I feel like this one I kind of caught before it fully locked up. So I think the treatment is a lot of it with the physios, a lot of it with heat.
“At the start of the year I was so scared of needles. It was my biggest phobia. That was the only way I was going to be able to play Australia.
“Since then, I’ve been kind of dipping my toes into it because I know it helps even though I’m really scared of them. That’s how I’ve kind of been trying to manage it.”
Raducanu has enjoyed a positive clay season thus far, having reached the fourth round of the Italian Open before losing to Coco Gauff. She also impressed against Daria Kasatkina in Strasbourg but was beaten by Danielle Collins in round two.
