A popular beach destination in eastern Cyprus has banned a controversial sunbed-saving practice, and the move is already sparking mixed reactions from holidaymakers.

The Paralimni-Deryneia municipality, located in the sun-soaked Province of Famagusta, has issued a firm warning to beachgoers who try to “reserve” loungers by leaving towels or personal belongings on them early in the morning or even the night before.

In a public statement, officials said the growing trend of “calling dibs” on beach loungers without renting them first is unfair and disruptive to other visitors.

Effective immediately, any unattended personal items left on unrented beach beds will be removed by municipal staff.

“Beachgoers must rent their sun loungers and umbrellas upon arrival,” the municipality declared, adding that people should retain their receipt as proof of payment.

The new rule has divided opinion among tourists, with some praising the crackdown as a win for fairness, while others, especially early risers, argue they’re simply trying to secure a good spot before the beach gets crowded.

“I get up at 6am on holiday for peace and a prime view, this feels like a punishment,” one British tourist commented online.

But others welcomed the change. “I’ve seen whole rows of loungers ‘booked’ with a single towel and no one shows up until noon. It’s ridiculous,” said another visitor.

Officials have also encouraged tourists to use contactless or mobile payments to rent their loungers, citing convenience for both guests and staff.

Signage along the beach will reinforce the updated rules, and beach attendants will be on hand to enforce them.

The ban comes as more European destinations confront the growing problem of ‘sunbed hogging,’ particularly at busy coastal resorts during the summer season.
