There’s bad news for some Sky viewers. Last month, Express.co.uk reported that a number of devices were losing compatibility with this hugely popular service, and now that shock block is just days away. In fact, a number of UK users will no longer be able to stream content from August 3rd. So, who does the change affect, and what devices are losing access to?

The update will cause issues for homes that view Sky’s channels via the online NOW service. The streaming platform, which ditches the need for a satellite dish or long-term contracts, is ending support for a number of older devices.

These include the NOW TV Smart Box (4500SK), Roku Streaming Stick (3500X), Roku Box (2700X), Roku Box (2710X) and Roku Box (2720X).

If any of those gadgets are tucked under your TV, you will have to buy something new to continue tuning in.

The move doesn’t appear to be a decision made directly by Sky. Instead, Roku is ending support for its ageing hardware, which has a knock-on effect for NOW.

The NOW TV Smart Box is also affected because it was developed in partnership with Roku.

All that’s bad news for some, the good news is that NOW still works on the vast majority of modern smart TVs, streaming sticks, games consoles and current Roku devices.

Unfortunately, the changes don’t stop there.

Support is also ending for several older Apple devices. According to reports, NOW will soon stop working on the iPhone 7 and earlier models, along with the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4.

The reason is simple: NOW will only support devices capable of running iOS 16 or later. As these older iPhones and iPads can’t be updated to Apple’s newer software, they will no longer be able to access the streaming service.

If you’re still using one of these ageing Apple devices to watch NOW, it may be time to consider an upgrade.

What is NOW?

For those aware, NOW is Sky’s contract-free streaming service. It gives viewers access to entertainment, movies, live sport, kids’ content and premium TV channels without signing up to a lengthy subscription or needing a dish stuck to the chimney. Memberships are paid monthly and can be cancelled at any time, making NOW a flexible alternative to a traditional satellite TV package.

The app is available on a wide range of devices, including smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, games consoles and streaming sticks, with subscribers able to watch everything from Sky Originals and blockbuster films to Premier League football and Formula 1.
