Senegal fury as Belgium complete World Cup comeback with VAR drama | Football | Sport
Senegal’s players were left furious after a late penalty decision in their World Cup match with Belgium saw them knocked out of the tournament. High drama unfolded in the round of 32 tie in Seattle, with extra time required to separate the two sides and determine who would advance to the last 16.
Belgium secured a 3-2 triumph over Senegal, mounting a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to draw level at 2-2 by the end of 90 minutes.
Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr had put Senegal into a commanding 2-0 advantage and appeared destined to book their spot in the last 16, before strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans forced an additional 30 minutes.
Belgium were subsequently handed a penalty following a challenge by Lamine Camara on Tielemans, with the Aston Villa star converting from the spot to send his nation into the next round.
Referee Said Martinez had not originally pointed to the spot for Belgium, but reversed his decision following a VAR review. Senegal’s players then surrounded the pitchside monitor, with several standing around the penalty spot.
The fury from Senegal’s players caused a significant delay before Tielemans could take the penalty for Belgium, with more than 10 minutes of added time played during extra time.
Tielemans stepped up to convert the penalty and propel Belgium into the World Cup’s last-16, where they await the winners of the round of 32 clash between the United States and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Belgium topped Group G to book their spot in the knockout rounds of the World Cup, doing so following a triumph over New Zealand alongside draws with Egypt and Iran earlier in the tournament.
The victory ensures Belgium join the growing list of sides who have secured a last-16 spot, including Canada, Paraguay, Morocco, France, Brazil, Norway, England and Mexico.
Should Belgium defeat either the United States or Bosnia & Herzegovina, they would meet one of Spain, Austria, Portugal or Croatia in the quarter-finals.
