Forget fibre broadband, there’s a far cheaper way to get Wi-Fi at home

If your monthly broadband bills are making you wince, it might be time to make a very simple change. Instead of getting your internet access via a fixed-line fibre connection, switching to a 4G/5G signal can save some serious money. Three Mobile has just announced a new June deal that has slashed the price of its over-the-air connectivity to just £18 per month. That’s a decent price as most of its full fibre rivals charge over £20 per month for similar access.

There are some other benefits of Three. Because it uses a mobile signal, there’s no fussy installation, and the router can be moved to different properties, making it ideal for those renting.

All customers need to do is plug in the device and switch it on. “No landline. No engineer. Plug and play set up,” Three explains.

Once up and running, Three says users will get speeds of around 150Mbps, which is ample for streaming Netflix, surfing the web and working from home.

Another bonus is that Three is also offering £200 credit to help customers leave their current supplier early.

“We’ll credit your Three account with the amount of your final bill from your previous provider, up to £200,” Three added.

Now, there are some things to note. Firstly, to get the best speeds, you need to be in an area with a good mobile signal. Three also requires you to sign up for a 24-month contract, and prices will rise during the term of the deal.

If that hasn’t put you off, you can see the deal below.

Of course, if you want blistering quick speeds, you will need to look at full fibre providers.

Luckily, there are some decent discounts on ultra-quick access with Sky, Virgin Media and Community Fibre all offering lower prices that look far more affordable than when Gbps broadband first launched.

Just remember, always check what speeds you really need, as you may find 1Gbps is far too fast for your daily needs.

As a guide, a couple who stream and work from home should be fine with around 200Mbps. Busy households that stream in 4K and download console games might want to boost things to faster speeds.
