The UK city that’s the speed camera capital – not London or Manchester | UK | News

The UK’s speed camera city has been crowned with one unlikely part of the country hosting the most speed cameras per square mile. The average placement of speed cameras means the city in question has the largest placement of speed cameras. The sheer volume of speed cameras puts it ahead of London on average.

While the capital features 1.93 cameras per square mile and features second on the list, it’s Bradford that leads the way as having the most of all. The West Yorkshire city boasts 2.18 cameras per square mile, the highest concentration in the whole country when it comes to keeping an eye on traffic.

Another West Yorkshire city, Dewsbury, features at number five on the list with a concentration of 1.74 speed cameras per square mile. Psychologist Dr. Gandolfi hjas since explained the key factors in placing so many traffic cameras per square mile.

Gandolfi said: “Generally, it is likely that key factors include lighter traffic, more recreational driving, and drivers may perceive a lower likelihood of encountering enforcement measures.

“In some sub-groups, particularly younger drivers, passengers are more likely to be in the vehicle with the driver during evenings and weekends, increasing the risk of peer pressure affecting driver decision making and increasing risky behaviour.

“Also, at night, there is a higher likelihood of the effects of fatigue and alcohol/drugs, which affect drivers’ judgment of their own speed and appropriate speeds for the conditions.

“Night driving also presents increased challenges in gathering visual information from the traffic environment, particularly in less built-up areas with lower ambient light levels. Older drivers are more likely to experience difficulties with glare and reduced contrast sensitivity when driving in low-light conditions.”
