Yuliia Starodubtseva caused the biggest upset of the French Open when she took out world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the second round. Now, it could force her boyfriend to propose.

The Ukrainian tennis star’s partner, Pearse Dolan, is also her coach, and world No. 55 Starodubtseva revealed that he promised he’d pop the question if she broke into the top 50.

After beating Rybakina 3-6 6-1 7-6(4), Starodubtseva is now one win away from achieving her rankings goal and getting a ring.

The 26-year-old said: “I’ll tell you a funny thing, actually. My boyfriend is my coach, and he told me if I break through top 50, he’ll propose!

“He’s getting scared now. I’m getting close.”

She now faces world No. 148 Wang Xiyu for a place in the second week – and for a proposal.

Starodubtseva doesn’t mind how Dolan gets down on one knee, just as long as it’s not on the court itself.

“I don’t pressure him at all,” she laughed. “I let him think on his own, whatever he wants to do. Just not on court, please.”
