Newcastle United have reportedly made a decision on Nick Woltemade’s future after his underwhelming debut season in the Premier League. The towering striker arrived from Stuttgart in the summer, replacing Alexander Isak following his record-breaking move to Liverpool. He initially made a promising start, scoring seven times before Christmas, but the goals have dried up since then.

Woltemade only has one Premier League goal in 2026, bagging the opener against West Ham United last weekend. It marked his first start in five games, with the German striker being left as an unused substitute against Brighton the previous week. His decline in form has led to speculation that Newcastle could look to move him on before the start of the 2026/27 season.

However, those in power at St James’ Park reportedly have no intention of selling Woltemade, who remains tied down until the summer of 2031.

Newcastle chiefs believe he will be more effective next season now that he understands the demands of English football, according to The Telegraph.

It’s claimed that Woltemade has impressed with his application in training and has shown evidence that he can thrive in a new, deeper role playing behind a main striker.

He has been playing in that position in recent games, with William Osula often being preferred to start for the Magpies up front.

The report adds that Newcastle don’t think they would be able to get anywhere close to the £64million fee they paid to sign Woltemade in the summer, should they decide to sell him.

He is also a popular figure in the dressing room and club chiefs believe he deserves a full pre-season under Eddie Howe before he is properly judged.

Howe came out in support of Woltemade after he helped Newcastle beat Crystal Palace last month, saying: “I thought Nick did really well today.

“Yoane [Wissa] and Nick both performed well when they came on. I thought both of our subs delivered a performance. Nick’s creativity for Yoane’s chance, that’s what he can do. He’s a very special talent in that respect.

“If Nick plays like he did today, he’ll get loads more minutes and opportunities to impress. I was very pleased with him. We played with a 4-3-3 today, changed our front three and moulded the selection.

“Our No 9s have been scoring, so unfortunately, he has had to wait for his opportunity. But, as I say, if he plays like he did today, I was very, very pleased with him.”
