As the name suggests, the fenix 7X Pro Sapphire Solar Edition is solar powered, so you won’t ever need to charge it up. I’ve tested solar watches before, and it really is the case that they don’t run out of charge, and removes one of the most annoying things about a wearable in the first place. I can accept charging my phone once a day, but it’s galling to charge a watch that often.

The only time this watch will run out of battery is if it’s not shown daylight for about three hours per day, or if you use several hours of GPS tracking in one go, which wears down the charge.

The fenix tracks all your baseline metrics as you’d expect – heart rate, stress, sleep and energy as well as activity insights like steps, floors climbed, and calories burned – and it’ll easy track running, biking, swimming and the gym, with built-in GPS for route tracking.

But it’s also built to accurately track specialist endeavours such as golf and backcountry skiing, complete with Garmin’s excellent mapping feature. The watch comes preloaded with accurate topographical maps, all at no extra cost. This acts much like a (slightly less detailed) Ordnance Survey map right on your wrist, with the added benefit of the GPS dot showing exactly where you are.

One thing to note is this watch does not have an OLED screen, instead using memory-in-pixel (MIP) tech, which is not as vibrant – but it means it’s fully readable even in direct sunlight. MIP is also kinder on battery life. If it’s too dim at night, there’s a light button you can press to make things clearer.
