The King and Queen were greeted by US president Donald Trump and his wife Melania outside the White House.

Charles exited the car first as the president took a few steps forward to greet him outside the White House’s south portico.

The pair shook hands while Camilla was met by the first lady.

Charles then shook hands with Mrs Trump, and Camilla appeared to be smiling and nodding as she shook hands with president Trump.

Both couples stood side by side for photographs before president Trump briefly touched the King’s arm and gestured behind him into the White House.

The president and first lady escorted the royal couple inside the building where they will go to the state floor for a private tea in the green room.
