British mum moves to Spain and energy bills stun her | Europe | Travel
Many people are drawn to the idea of relocating abroad, with the promise of better weather, a more relaxed lifestyle and exceptional cuisine.
However, one mum has recently revealed another significant benefit of moving overseas. Jodie Marlow, known as @jodiemar1ow on TikTok, shares her experiences of life as a mum who has relocated to Spain, and she recently discussed her living costs.
It appears there’s a substantial difference in what she pays to maintain a home, with many people shocked by the low prices in Spain. In a video, she explained that they don’t have any rent or mortgage payments as they own their property outright.
She also mentioned that the cost of electricity is “really good”, especially since changing suppliers. Jodie shared: “Oh my gosh, amazing.
“Last month, before I really put the aircon on, was €37 (£30.82). This month I’ve had the aircon on nearly every night for the boys and, I think when I tried to look quickly because it’s not generated fully, it’s around €55 to €60 (around £45.82), which I think is nothing.”
She added: “So, if anyone lives in Spain and pays their own electricity bills, you need to message me. I can’t believe how cheap it’s changed to.
“Water is around €99 (£82.47) every three months, so that’s €33 (£27.49) every month. The house actually runs off a gas bottle. I thought it was really weird at first but, actually, it’s pretty normal in Spain, and a gas bottle costs around €16 (£13.33).”
Jodie revealed that during hot periods, people often ditch warm showers, leading to lower usage of her boiler. She also saves on cooking costs by preferring a barbecue and airfryer over the gas hob.
She discovered that, under the right circumstances, a single gas bottle can last up to three months. Jodie estimates her council tax at around €21 (£17.49) monthly, which she considers quite reasonable, and her home insurance is similarly priced.
Since posting her cost-saving tips online, Jodie’s video has racked up hundreds of views. Commenters expressed astonishment at her low expenses.
Comments have poured in, with one user exclaiming: “60 Euros a month! We spend £40 per week for a four-bed house in England.”
Another responded: “Oh my god, your electric is so cheap. Ours is so much more!” And yet another replied “So cheap. My gas and electric is £250 together, and my council tax is like £180 a month.”
