A shooter has opened fire at Florida State University with students taking shelter as the police responded.

The shooting occurred on the campus in Tallahassee at about lunchtime local time.

The school urged students to take shelter after it was reported the shooter was in the student union area.

A suspect is believed to be in custody. There were initial reports of at least four people being hospitalised, with the figure revised up to six.

One of those six people is fighting for their life, with the remainder said to be in a serious condition.
