I lived in one of the UK’s ugliest cities but I completely disagree with its ranking | Travel News | Travel
A recent study from the team at Atlas Ceramics, named Derry the ugliest city in the UK. Leeds didn’t fare much better, landing just outside the top three, as the UK’s fourth ugliest city.
While beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder, I think that rating is totally unfair and there’s a lot to love about Leeds.
Full transparency, I lived in the city for three years as a student and absolutely loved my time there.
Sure, the city’s Merrion shopping centre isn’t the most attractive place for Christmas shopping, but there are plenty of prettier spots.
I loved Leeds’ Victoria Quarter, a Grade II listed covered network of boutique shops and cafes. The stained glass artwork is stunning and while the shops are expensive, it’s still a pretty place for a wander.
A tourist ‘Ian D’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Stunning arcade. This is probably one of the nicest shopping areas in the country.”
Just around the corner from the Victoria Quarter is Kirkgate Market, one of Europe’s largest indoor covered markets. There’s little you can’t buy here and the historic market is also something of an architectural gem.
The market also has an extensive food court with a huge range of cheap options for lunchtime, or pick up ingredients from one of the stalls.
While Leeds’ waterfront isn’t one of the most attractive in the country, it’s still a pleasant place to grab a drink or go for a walk.
For the best views from the water, catch one of the city’s River Taxis which cost just £2 for a ride and are free for children under five.
